Mumbai is India's most vibrant and diverse city. Tourists are welcome with open arms and the service is excellent wherever you go. This city never sleeps and have so much to offer culturally and spiritually. This is probably one of the best places in India for street photography. The pictures I managed to show small glimpses of this great city. I was too busy enjoying the city. The city is home to expensive real estate and at the same time home to people from all walks of life. This is a very special for me since I met my wife here and have been visiting regularly for the past 36 years.
Leopold cafe is one of the oldest cafes in Mumbai in the Colaba area. This place is famous for Omelets and other snacks. Inspite, of extensive damage during a terrorist attack, this restaurant reponed the next morning, representing the resilience and indomitable spirit of Mumbai.
We visited with our dear Bharatnatyam teachers - Kalaimamani Padmasri Guru Kalyanasundaram and Mythili Mami of Sri Rajarajeswari Bharatanatya Kala Mandir in Mumbai. He was recently awarded Padmasri for his contributions to Bharatanatyam in addition to many other awards. He is an extraordinary teacher, mentor, and choreographer and has trained hundreds of students in this great art form. The picture below is when we visited with him and my daughter performing a Kautuvam. Both Masterji and Mami take personal interest in every student every one of them become family to them. It was a pleasure seeing them both.
Kemp's Corner - South Mumbai. We stayed in the Kemp's corner area in Mumbai. This is the wealthiest part of Mumbai and for that matter in India. At the same time, the place has a character of its own with chai Walas, bhaji shops, nice restaurants, street food and fruit stalls. In other words, this place is not all pretentious. The brown building below is the famous Kachenjunga Apartments designed by Charles Correa - one of his iconic masterpieces. It is designed to make the best of the sea breezes from the west and reducing the exposure to heavy rain and sun. The apartments are designed like interlocking blocks using primary colors.
The photo below is captured in Saras Baug where my wife used to live. This is a colony with single family homes with beautiful landscape. One would never feel the hustle and bustle of Mumbai in this complex. The land was given to BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Center) senior leadership in the 1970s. My daughter has lots of fond memories about this place when she visited India regularly. Very rare to find a beautiful housing complex in a city like Mumbai. The next picture is the Mahalaxmi Dosa Center on the way to the famous Mahalaxmi Temple - the iconic Devi who protects the city.
